Researchers at the University of Virginia and Harvard University have developed an innovative thermal barrier coating (TBC) for gas turbines, which are essential in power plants and aircraft. By substituting iron into yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ), the researchers enhanced the material’s heat absorption in the near-infrared range, allowing for more efficient thermal management. This advancement could enable turbines to operate more efficiently and for longer durations, thereby reducing fuel consumption, cutting costs, and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions. This breakthrough offers promising applications across high-temperature energy systems and manufacturing environments, potentially extending turbine life and lowering maintenance needs.
