A new study has elucidated the mechanisms behind high-temperature superconductivity in cuprates using an enhanced Hubbard model. Researchers at the Flatiron Institute, led by Shiwei Zhang, introduced diagonal electron hops into the model, successfully recreating key superconductive properties. This breakthrough, achieved through extensive supercomputer simulations, demonstrates the efficacy of classical computation in quantum research and advances understanding of cuprates, which superconduct at much higher temperatures than previously thought. The findings could lead to technological innovations like efficient power transmission and faster MRI scanners.
