Scientists at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory have identified a new class of semiconductor nanocrystals with bright ground-state excitons. This discovery addresses the dark exciton problem, which has hindered the efficiency of light-emitting devices. By utilizing high-throughput computational screening and advanced calculations, researchers identified materials with inverted exciton ordering, leading to brighter emissions. This breakthrough could enhance the performance of LEDs, lasers, and other optoelectronic devices, offering a broad spectrum of applications from infrared to ultraviolet light emission.
