This article outlines a significant discovery by a Chinese research team concerning abiotic organic synthesis in the oceanic crust of the Southwest Indian Ridge. Building on previous findings of nanoscale abiotic organic matter, the team proposed a new molecular mechanism for organic condensation. Using advanced microanalysis techniques and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, they revealed how goethite catalyzes the hydrogenation of carbon dioxide and carbon chain growth in hydrothermal environments. This research sheds light on the natural pathways for forming abiotic carbonaceous matter, providing insights into both Earth’s deep-sea carbon cycling and the potential for similar processes on other planets.
