Researchers developed a PdPt₁ single-atom alloy catalyst that achieves record ethanol oxidation activity while reducing platinum usage. Individual Pt atoms are isolated within a tensile-strained palladium surface, forming a highly active catalytic structure. Density functional theory calculations reveal how strain and electronic interactions enhance catalytic activity in fuel cell reactions.
