Researchers from Kyushu University and Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology have explored the dynamics of phase transitions in cholesteric blue phase liquid crystals, materials with unique cubic symmetry. Using direct simulations and the MALIO machine learning tool, they analyzed transitions from BP II to BP I phases, focusing on the formation and growth of twin boundaries. Their study revealed how microscopic structural changes occur, including the emergence of small BP I domains that grow into ordered arrays. This innovative approach provides valuable insights into liquid crystal dynamics and is applicable to other soft materials, such as polymers and biological systems, offering potential advancements in materials science. The findings were published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
