Imaging the microstructural landscape of amorphous carbons

Researchers at the University of Science and Technology of China have identified six phases of amorphous carbons using molecular dynamics simulations. These phases range from disordered graphene networks to various forms of amorphous and nano-polycrystalline diamonds, exhibiting unique microstructural characteristics. Their study also developed a phase diagram showing the relationship between the sp³/sp² ratio and density, revealing discontinuities that suggest different forms of amorphous carbon can be distinguished by their microstructural topologies. This research enhances understanding of amorphous carbons’ properties under different conditions and aids in the synthesis of new materials.
