Machine learning to 'reverse-engineer' new composite materials

Researchers at Binghamton University are developing a machine learning model that reverse-engineers new composite materials by customizing their microarchitecture based on specific mechanical needs. Funded by a National Science Foundation grant, the project aims to design materials that can respond differently to forces from various directions. By training deep-learning algorithms with thousands of computational models, the team hopes to create tailored materials for applications like shock absorption and aerospace. The project will be validated using 3D printing, X-ray imaging, and stress testing.
