Researchers at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) have developed optimized high explosive designs by combining advanced computing and manufacturing methods. Project DarkStar, inspired by Johnny von Neumann’s work, uses AI, machine learning, and 3D printing to rapidly create and test shaped charge designs. These experiments focused on mitigating hydrodynamic instabilities, such as the Richtmyer–Meshkov Instability (RMI), through the use of a silicone buffer. This research aims to improve explosive effectiveness and has potential applications in aerospace engineering and energy security.
