The article discusses the creation of an “AI Scientist” by researchers from Sakana AI and various academic institutions. This AI system automates much of the scientific process, from reading literature to generating hypotheses, conducting simulations, and writing papers. However, it is currently limited to machine learning research and cannot perform lab experiments. Although its output has so far been incremental, the project represents a significant step toward the future of AI-assisted scientific discovery.
