Researchers at Ateneo de Manila University investigated the mechanical properties of silicon carbide (SiC), a semiconductive ceramic material prevalent in space but rare on Earth, using LAMMPS molecular dynamics simulations. SiC’s unique electrical and thermal properties make it valuable in applications like microprocessors and space-grade heat shields. The study focused on how varying carbon content affects SiC’s elasticity, tensile strength, yield strength, and toughness. Results showed that increasing carbon content strengthens SiC up to a 25% threshold, beyond which mechanical performance diminishes. The team recommends further research, including real-sample testing and assessments at elevated temperatures, to deepen these findings.
