Scientists from Miguel Hernández University of Elche have identified highly soluble molecules, idebenone (IDE) and mitoquinone (MTQ), that exhibit superior antioxidant benefits compared to ubiquinone. These molecules are more soluble, can move freely between membranes, and are better absorbed, which enhances their antioxidant efficacy. The study suggests that these molecules can help reduce free radical production in different zones and depths of biological membranes, potentially preventing degenerative diseases. The research employed molecular dynamics simulations to analyze these molecules’ behavior in a mitochondrial-like membrane.
