MAX phases boost electrocatalytic biomass upgrading

This article discusses a breakthrough by Chinese scientists in enhancing electrocatalytic biomass upgrading using MAX phases. These materials, known for their structural properties, were modified by introducing single-atom-thick cobalt layers, resulting in highly efficient electrocatalysis for the oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), a biomass derivative, coupled with hydrogen evolution. The new MAX phase catalyst achieved an impressive 94.4% yield of 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), a valuable chemical, while maintaining structural stability in harsh alkaline conditions. This development highlights the potential of MAX phases in green catalysis and energy applications.
