Proton-conducting materials could enable new green energy technologies

MIT engineers have identified promising proton-conducting materials, which could significantly enhance green energy technologies like fuel cells, electrolyzers, and proton batteries. These materials, derived from solid acids, can conduct protons efficiently at lower temperatures, reducing energy use and material degradation compared to current high-temperature conductors. Using computer simulations, the team pinpointed six new materials with superior proton conduction properties. This advancement could lead to more efficient hydrogen production and other clean energy applications, though practical implementation may take years.
